Electric blanket reviews, electric throw blanket reviews, and electric mattress pad reviews

A good electric blanket can pay for itself by saving you money on heating bills. With the blanket to keep you warm, you may be able to set the thermostat several degrees cooler, staying warm under the covers as you save.  They can also keep you warm in rooms that heat unevenly or don’t heat well. Most homes, especially older ones, have at least one - a room that remains chilly even when the heater is keeping the rest of the house toasty warm.  An electric throw blanket can help a cold-natured person stay comfortable in a home or office where others prefer to turn the thermostat way down. Some people even use these throw blankets in summer, in offices where management chooses to blast the air conditioning.  In this article, we’ll take a look at the best electric blankets and electric throw blankets.  We’ll also take a look at electric mattress pads, an alternative to electric blankets.

The Soft Heat blanket (pictured above) bills itself as “the world’s safest heated warming blanket.” Their Safe-n-Warm Technology, which converts 120 volt DC current into 14-18 volts, assures that you will be able to sleep safely, free from the burns or shocks that are a danger in older and cheaper electric blankets.  It’s the first and only blanket in the US to be certified as UL safe using less than 25 volts of electricity.

Reviewers loved the Soft Heat electric blanket!  One wrote that she had problems in the past with stiff, bulky blankets, full of hard spots due to wiring.  On the Soft Heat blanket, though, she said “the wires are so inobtrusive that we hardly notice them,” and she described the blanket as “luxuriously cuddly, very lightweight, [and] super warm.” Another reader said it’s easy to care for, noting that she washes it on gentle cycle, dries it on low, and it comes out fine every time.  She also said it didn’t shrink in the dryer and doesn’t pill up as some electric blankets do.  Several readers noted that it takes a little time to heat up, and it works best when you turn it on about a half hour before you get in bed.

The Sunbeam electric blanket was also highly regarded by people who own it. One reviewer noted that the blanket has dual controls so each side of the bed can be warmed to a different temperature, important because “I’m always hot and [my wife] is always cold.”  Other reviewers thought the blanket was a great value for the price.  One bought it for Mom and Dad and said they’re very happy with it; another liked it for use in the guest room.  This blanket is available in various colors and sizes - here they are:

If you prefer to have the heat underneath you, rather than on top of you, an electric mattress pad will do the trick. One owner of the Sunbeam heated mattress pad said the pad has been great for her knee problems. She also turns it on in the morning, before she gets up to go running, and reports that it helps her run more easily.  “When I’m sore I lie on the mattress pad, and it just relaxes my muscles,” she writes.  Another owner said it “does the job,” warming up the bed in less than 2 minutes.  She said it was sufficiently padded so that you don’t feel the wires.  Another reviewer reports that the Sunbeam electric mattress pad “warms the bed evenly,” with no hot spots.  Yet another review says it’s “great for cold feet!” The Sunbeam pad is available in the following sizes:

We couldn’t find the Sunbeam electric mattress pad in size full, but there is a Biddeford heated mattress pad in that size.

A smaller throw blanket is perfect to keep you warm during daytime activites. The Sunbeam warming throw was highly rated.  One reviewer bought the throw for an extremely cold-natured elderly person, who uses it 12 to 15 hours a day.  Another owner of this blanket bought it for her daughter, who was always cold while reading or watching TV.  “She’s not a popsicle anymore,” the owner wrote.  Another reviewer called it the best money he’d ever spent, because the blanket allowed him to “reclaim a room that I don’t use in the winter due to the chill that is always present.” He compared the blanket favorably to electric blankets costing double to quadruple the price. Another reader commented that Sunbeam electric throw blankets can be hard to find in stores, but that’s okay, because we’ve got you covered with links to order them from Amazon:
